Salon Hair at Home

From the moment the government ordered a shutdown of all non-essential shops, pubs and salons, hordes of woman across the country started to buying up ‘do it yourself’ hair dye like there was no tomorrow.

Why? Well, whether we like to admit it or not, our hair has a rather astounding affect our mood and feelings of self-worth. Need proof. Just take a look at all the swarths of hair loss clinics across the country, charging balding men (and woman) a small fortune for the chance to regain their once full head off hair.

Hair effects our confidence, fact. So, when we as a collective (because let’s be honest here it’s not just us woman) realised that we might not be able to visit a salon for up 3 months (even more if rumours are to be believed), the full reality of what that could mean hit us hard. Roots that go on for day, greys we had forgotten even existed, wonky trims, fringes reminiscent of our primary school days and block colour dye jobs. The whole country could reappear from isolation looking like some bad rerun from the 80’s.

Katie Allan, founder of Mayfive Hair advises to stay clear of the home hair dyes, as they don’t  have the same technology as in-salon dyes and create a very basic one dimensional result.

“Forget stock piling on toilet roll and rice, pick up L'Oreal's Hair Touch Up £12.99 for your beauty cabinet. It's basically a 'spray paint' for hair with multiple different colours and will wash out when you next shampoo.” explains Katie. “Alternatively, raid that makeup box and apply anything with a similar colour to yours to disguise any unwanted whites such as eyeshadow or even mascara!” And don’t forget about the power accessories. “Headbands are super cool and great to chuck on to hide a grey hairline AND to cover up oily roots!”

While Founder and Creative Director of STIL salon, Christel Lundqvist recommends taking supplements, like Viviscal Maximum Strength Supplements, to strengthening hair from the inside out to help promote healthy hair growth. “Using supplements in conjunction with an at-home protein strengthening wash is ideal for hair that’s become weakened. These products will help to rebuild the hair’s natural keratin level, as well as strengthening the outer layer of the hair.” For after-care, Christel recommends products containing keratin lipids and coconut oil, as these will rebuild the internal structure. “Bamboo extract is also a great ingredient for added hydration.”

For those of us with fine hair, Christel suggests using serums to add body and volume. “Dry shampoo is also my best kept secret when it comes to creating long lasting volume in the hair. It gently cleanses the hair but creates the appearance of fullness around fine strands; giving the hair a natural plumpness and flexibility.”.
