Should You Really Be Syncing Your Workouts With Your Menstrual Cycle?
Turns out, better training might begin with better timing.
One week youβre flying through your workout like someone has secretly upgraded your body overnight. The next, your usual weights feel offensive, your legs have stopped cooperating and even the idea of a burpee seems frankly unreasonable. Could your menstrual cycle really be the reason?
If you exercise regularly, youβll know the feeling. Some days you are inexplicably brilliant. Stronger, faster, more energetic, possibly even smug enough to add another set. Then, with no obvious warning, the exact same workout feels as though it has been designed by someone who actively dislikes you.
We usually blame sleep, stress, children, work, wine, not enough coffee, too much coffee β essentially the entire contents of modern life. But increasingly, women are wondering whether part of the answer might be their menstrual cycle.
Enter cycle syncing: the idea that instead of expecting your body to perform exactly the same way every day of the month, you adjust your training around what your hormones are doing.
On paper, it sounds wonderfully sensible. Train harder when energy and recovery are supposedly at their best. Pull back when your period hits or your energy dips. Stop feeling guilty because Tuesdayβs HIIT class suddenly feels like Everest.
Naturally, social media has turned the idea into colour-coded commandments: lift now, sprint here, Pilates there, rest on Day 26, presumably while drinking herbal tea and thinking about progesterone.
The interesting bit is that there is real science underneath it.
Is There Actually Any Science Behind Cycle Syncing?
Anyone who trains regularly will know that your body can have wildly different opinions about the exact same workout. One week the weights are flying, your energy is good and you leave the gym feeling almost offensively pleased with yourself. A week or two later, the same session feels heavier, hotter and considerably less charming.
Your menstrual cycle could be part of the reason.
Across the month, oestrogen and progesterone rise and fall, and each brings a slightly different set of effects. Oestrogen climbs through the first half of the cycle, particularly as you move towards ovulation. It can influence energy metabolism, blood flow and muscle function, and this higher-oestrogen phase is often associated with feeling more energetic and, in some studies, performing slightly better in certain types of exercise.

Then comes progesterone. After ovulation, progesterone rises during the luteal phase and changes the picture again. Core body temperature nudges upwards, which can make harder sessions feel hotter and more taxing, particularly if youβre already exercising somewhere warm. Fatigue, fluid retention and that familiar pre-period sense that everything suddenly requires rather more enthusiasm can also make an appearance.
Progesterone can alter the fuel your body prefers to use too. During longer, steadier exercise, you may rely slightly more on fat and conserve more carbohydrate. That sounds rather efficient, but carbohydrate is the fuel your body can access quickly when the intensity goes up. For sprints, harder intervals or demanding strength sessions, that can potentially translate into feeling as though there is a little less readily available energy in the tank.
Then, in the days leading up to your period, both oestrogen and progesterone fall. Add cramps, disturbed sleep, headaches, bloating or simply feeling less energetic, and it isnβt difficult to understand why the workout you sailed through last week can suddenly feel like a personal insult.
The hormonal changes themselves are very real. The more useful question is whether they affect performance enough to justify changing the way you train.
Research so far suggests that they can, but not in one neat, universal pattern. Some studies have found small differences in strength, endurance, temperature regulation and perceived effort at different points in the menstrual cycle, while others have found very little change at all.
That is where cycle syncing gets more interesting β because the science is less about following a fixed monthly workout chart and more about understanding whether your own body follows a pattern worth using.
How To Actually Cycle-Sync Your Workouts
Forget the beautifully illustrated four-week plan telling you precisely when to sprint, squat and lie horizontally. The useful version of cycle syncing starts with finding out what your month actually looks like.
Start with an app that lets you track more than bleeding dates. Clue is a good option because you can log things such as energy, sleep, pain, mood and other symptoms alongside your menstrual cycle. Do it properly for two or three months and add one extra piece of information: what happened in the gym.
Nothing complicated. Note whether the session felt unusually easy or inexplicably awful, whether you lifted more than usual, struggled with cardio, felt wiped afterwards or had the sort of energy that makes adding another set seem like an excellent idea.
Then look for repetition.If the same few days of your cycle repeatedly coincide with great strength sessions, use them. Put the heavier lifts, harder intervals or sessions you want to progress there. If another part of the month reliably comes with poor sleep, cramps, headaches or legs that appear to have resigned, donβt waste your hardest workout fighting against it. Move the session, reduce the load or change what youβre doing.
And this is the part the generic cycle-syncing charts miss: you donβt need to change anything unless your own pattern gives you a reason to.
You may discover that your period barely affects your training but the three days beforehand absolutely do. You might feel brilliant around ovulation. You might find cardio changes more than strength. Or, after three months of diligent tracking, you may discover that your hormones are far less interested in your gym schedule than Instagram promised. That is still useful information.
The aim isnβt to become a full-time analyst of your ovaries. Itβs to stop treating every unexpectedly bad workout as a personal failing and start recognising when there may be a perfectly good physiological reason for it.
Once you know your pattern, the real benefit is that you can train more intelligently rather than just harder. You can put your most demanding sessions where they are more likely to feel productive, ease off when your body is clearly asking for it, and potentially get more consistency across the month instead of swinging between brilliant workouts and ones that feel inexplicably awful.
It may also make recovery easier to manage and take some of the guilt out of those days when your usual pace simply isnβt there. The goal isnβt to do less exercise. Itβs to stop wasting effort fighting your own physiology.
